3rd Grade Mathematics
In 3rd grade mathematics, students build a strong foundation in number sense, operations, and problem-solving while learning to apply math in real-world situations. Using the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) as a guide, students develop fluency with multiplication and division facts, explore fractions, understand place value up to 100,000, and work with decimals to the tenths. Students will measure length, area, time, capacity, and weight using both customary and metric units, and they will collect, represent, and interpret data. Geometry concepts include identifying and classifying two- and three-dimensional figures, recognizing congruence and symmetry, and understanding perimeter. Emphasis is placed on mathematical reasoning, communication, and the use of models, tools, and strategies to solve multi-step problems.
This course encourages students to develop a positive mathematical mindset, build confidence through hands-on activities and collaborative learning, and see the connection between math and everyday life.
4th Grade Mathematics
In fourth grade mathematics, students build on their foundational skills while developing greater fluency and problem-solving strategies. Guided by the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), students will extend their understanding of place value to numbers up to one billion, strengthen multiplication and division skills, and apply operations to solve multi-step problems. Students will explore fractions and decimals, including comparing, ordering, and adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators. Measurement and geometry concepts are expanded as students calculate perimeter and area, classify two- and three-dimensional figures, and work with angles, lines, and symmetry. Students will also represent and analyze data using tables and graphs, and they will apply algebraic thinking through patterns and equations.
Throughout the year, students will engage in hands-on activities, mathematical discussions, and real-world applications that encourage critical thinking, collaboration, and confidence in problem-solving.
5th Grade Mathematics
In fifth grade mathematics, students deepen their understanding of numbers, operations, and problem-solving to prepare for middle school success. Using the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), students extend place value to the billions, work fluently with multiplication and division of whole numbers, and solve problems with decimals and fractions, including addition and subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators. Students will also explore positive rational numbers, order of operations, and algebraic reasoning with expressions and equations. Measurement concepts include volume, conversions within a system, and application of perimeter and area. In geometry, students classify two-dimensional figures, analyze attributes, and apply coordinate grids. Students will also collect, represent, and interpret data using graphs, with an emphasis on real-world applications.
Throughout the year, students will engage in collaborative learning, hands-on activities, and mathematical discussions that strengthen reasoning skills, build confidence, and promote perseverance in problem-solving.
